Elk Mound is located right in the middle of the three largest cities in Western Wisconsin -- Eau Claire, Menomonie, and Chippewa Falls. Highway 29 (now 4-lane) and Interstate 94 help Elk Mound to these larger cities.
The village of Elk Mound gets its name from the hill overlooking the village. Elk Mound was formed by glacial debris and is several hundred feet tall. At the top of the mound there is a 25-foot tall observation deck built to look like a castle. Many years ago, legend has it that the mound was used by hunters to spot herds of buffalo and elk.
