Altoona borders Eau Claire's east side. In many areas, you might not know you had crossed from Eau Claire into Altoona. Altoona could be considered Eau Claire's nearest suburb, if a city of 65,000 can have a suburb. As such, many of Altoona's homes were more recently built. About 70% of the houses in Altoona were built after 1970. By comparison, only about 50% of Eau Claire's homes are that new.

Real estate in Altoona tends to be more expensive than in Eau Claire, most likely due to the fact that many of Altoona's homes are newer. The average selling price of residential homes in Altoona in 2006 was just over $165,000. By comparison, homes in the Eau Claire school district during the same period sold for an average of $152,000.

Because of its proximity to the growing city of Eau Claire, Altoona has also experienced steady growth for many years. Altoona is now home to just under 7,000 people.

Parks

840-acre Lake Altoona was formed by the creation of the Altoona dam, which is on the Eau Claire river. Lake Altoona County Park is located on the south shore of Lake Altoona. Lake Altoona County Park includes a boat landing, a clubhouse and pavilion, a swimming beach, sand volleyball courts, and playground equipment. It is a great place to hold large family or corporate gatherings, as the clubhouse and shelter can accomodate up to 300 people.

Lake Front Park is alo located ont he south shore of Lake Altoona. Lake Front Park 's fishing pier, picnic tables, and facilities are all accessible to people with physical challenges.

Altoona City Park is a 5+ acre park which contains facilities for baseball, tennis, and basketball in addition to playground equipment. City Park also has a pavilion and a recreation building, the latter of which is staffed during park hours in summer so kids can play in a supervised environment.

Cinder City Park is a 25-acre sports complex with 8 baseball and softball fields, 4 of them lighted.

Devney Park is a 4-acre park with facilities for baseball, tennis and basketball. Devney Park also has a pavilion, restrooms, and a recreation building.

Centennial Park has not yet been developed. There are hiking trails that run along Otter Creek, a tributary of the Eau Claire river. The trails also run up the surrounding hills toward Eau Claire.
